Almighty God, we ask your protection over Shafqat
Emmanuel and his wife, Shagufta Kausar, who were recently acquitted of allegedly
sending derogatory remarks about the Muslim prophet Mohammed in a text message
to another man. We celebrate that they are free after seven years on a
Pakistani death row, but we know many would seek their deaths while they are
free. We pray that officials would provide security for this couple and their
lawyer and that all three (and any family members) would be relocated if
necessary. Lord, we are thankful that a European Union Parliament
resolution drew attention to Pakistan’s rising blasphemy accusations and
vigilante violence. We pray that Pakistan’s government will move toward freedom
of religion for its people and eliminate the death penalty for those accused of
blasphemy. Lord, we think of this word of truth: “And they overcame
him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they
loved not their lives unto the death” (Revelation 12:11). Even while we
pray for religious liberty, we also pray that your children would continue to
stand for you, regardless of the trials that may come. We humbly pray, amen.
